Grade 8 Language Arts Homework, Outlines and Rubrics
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year at Halifax Central Junior High School! Please check gnspes/GAFE for class assignments and rubrics. I will post reminders about homework on this website.
Oct. 16-20:
Oct. 18: Please complete the activities you did not complete in GAFE today.
-copy and paste your typed paragraph on The Marathon of Hope in GAFE (see first post with the class list)
-apply and reject your changes to your autobiography assignment in GAFE
-develop two goals for improvement in writing based on the suggestions made in your autobiography assignment in GAFE (writing reflection rubric)

Oct. 9-13: Students should be finished their biography choice book by Oct. 16 and their research by Oct. 20.
Oct. 2-6: All students should have made a choice for their biography project and they should be reading a book on the person they've chosen. Students will share information they learned from reading a one page biography in small groups. We will identify qualities of a strong presentation. We will also learn about the structure of a paragraph.
Sept. 25-28: Students explored biographies specific to topics (sports, media, human rights, world leaders etc.). I will use Terry Fox as a model example during the biography project process. Students went to the library and focused writing a reading response on the reading strategy: visualize. Biography choices were due on Thursday, but since I was out sick all week I will check in with students on Monday.
Sept. 18-22: We will begin working on the next assignment - Biography. Students will choose a person they would like to learn about and will need to read a book on that person. We will also set up reading logs this week. Students should be reading at home regularly.
Sept. 12-Sept. 15: The rough draft of your autobiography assignment is due tomorrow (Wednesday). Your baby picture is due on Thursday. The good copy of your autobiography is due before midnight on Thursday. I will do a homework check for your autobiography assignment at the beginning of Friday's class.
*I will try and continue to update my website; however with gnspes I am wondering if this is redundant. I will continue to monitor how many people are checking the website to determine its value.

Monday, April 3: We are currently working on a literature circles' unit on short stories. All materials are available in the Google Classroom. Your first literature circles' role is due tomorrow.
Friday, Feb. 24: Please have your rough draft of your paragraph on theme ready for Tuesday's Language Arts class. The revised good copy is to be "turned in" on gnspes before midnight on Tuesday. Most people will hand their good copy in during Tuesday's class.
Movie Trailers should be "turned in" on gnspes by the end of Monday's class. I have booked the I-Pads to work on this for Monday afternoon.
The Outsiders novels will be collected (your movie ticket) Wednesday next week. You will still need these novels to write your paragraph on theme.
We will begin a novel study on, The Outsiders, written by S. E. Hinton tomorrow in class. Nov. 9: I changed the due date of the assignment to Thursday at midnight to provide students with more time to complete their assignments. Today we reviewed the Autobiography assignment feedback and worked on a reflection on student writing. The hope is that the reflection will direct improvements for future writing assignments. Tomorrow I will review the expectations for the Google Slide presentation on your biography choice.
Nov. 7: Your rough draft of your assignment is due tomorrow. We will have an editing class tomorrow. The good copy of your assignment is due on Wednesday, Nov. 10 before midnight (so when I check during class on Thursday, your assignment has been handed in).
Nov. 4: Please complete the introduction paragraph and the body of your biography essay for Monday (3 complete paragraphs that follow the paragraph cake model we have practised using in class - topic sentence, fact 1, detail 1, fact 2, detail 2, fact 3, detail 3 and conclusion sentence). This is a total of 4 paragraphs. Please bring in your biography book you used for your project. I will do a mini lesson on how to cite your sources.

Sept. 28: We started learning about the research process today in our biography unit. I will use Terry Fox as a model example as we work through this assignment. Students will learn how to collect information in point form by using a graphic organizer. We will use this information to develop well structured paragraphs.

Sept. 27: Students worked on the following reading strategy: Visualizing. Your biography choices for our next project are due next Tuesday (Oct. 4). Our class trip is on Thursday, Oct. 6 - please bring in your permission forms (see above) and $15 (cheques can be made payable to Halifax Central Junior High School).
Sept. 26: Students worked on a creative writing entry - tell the story of the baby picture you chose for your autobiography. We will go to the school library tomorrow. Ms. C. will show us where to find the biography section in our library. You must have a book on the person you choose to write your biography on and begin reading it sooner than later. This can be used as one your sources.
Sept. 20: Please come prepared to edit your Autobiography assignment tomorrow in class. Your assignment is due before midnight, Wednesday, Sept. 21. Your baby picture is due Thursday during class. Today we went to library and completed an entry in our reading logs - making connections. It is important you complete all responses throughout the term. If you are absent, you should complete your response during silent reading when you return.
Sept. 19: I will book the Chrome books to continue the editing process on Wednesday. The date for the assignment remains Wednesday before midnight. We experienced many technical difficulties in the computer lab this afternoon... my apologies. Please make sure your autobiography is in between the pre-write and the editors' checks on the autobiography assignment. This will make it much easier for you to share your assignment. Thank you for your patience.
Sept. 16: Your rough copy of your autobiography is due on Monday, Sept. 19. Please make sure you have revised and reviewed your work - it should be your best. We will have an editing class on Monday where you will edit 2 peers' work. The good copy of your autobiography is due on Wednesday, Sept. 21 before midnight (please remember to "Turn In" your assignment on Google Docs). Your baby picture for the guessing game is due on Thursday at the beginning of Language Arts class. We will play the guessing game during class on Friday.
Sept. 14: Students joined the GAFE Grade 8 Language Arts classroom today and reviewed the autobiography assignment. We will continue to work on this tomorrow. The assignment is due Wednesday, Sept. 21 before midnight.

Sept. 9: I have asked students to have all of their school supplies ready for Monday's class. I also assigned a postcard be completed to reflect your own quote (word's to live by, your belief etc.) which is due on Wednesday, Sept. 14. You can use a postcard you already have or create your own design on the card I gave you. These will be displayed on the back bulletin boards.
We will also begin an autobiography project next week. You might want to check around for a baby picture as we will play a guessing game when the assignment is due. This year, I will ask students to use Google Docs and place the assignment in the Google classroom using GAFE (Google Apps for Education).

June 15: Students completed a reflection on third term reading today in class. This is found on Google Docs in the Language Arts classroom.
June 13-17: We finished up the book report presentation today in class. We will work on poetry, a short story and possibly some reader's theater from now until the end of the school year. Most activities will be completed in class.
June 2: We will continue book report presentations in class tomorrow and into next week. Each student has a summer reading booklet and a place to jot down book titles from their peers presentations (if the book sounds like an interesting read). If a student is absent or we did not finish the presentations from the day before, that student(s) will present the following day. This is the schedule for the upcoming book reports.

May 26: Your book reports are due by midnight.
May 25: Please make sure you have completed and sent all parts of My World by tonight at midnight. My trial for the program is supposed to end by tomorrow. Please continue to work on your novel study that is due May 26th by midnight.
May 20: All 4 parts of My World are due by Wednesday, May 25. Any missed quizzes will be given on Wednesday, May 25. We completed Chapter 4 in class today. Please make sure if you have missed school, you catch up on work that is missed. Tuesday will be a library class/class to work on you novel study/class to catch up on submitting your results for My World.
May 19: Chapter 3, My World is due tomorrow (posted on Google Docs). We will try and work on Chapter 4 tomorrow. Students will have Tuesdays to work on their book reports instead of their reading logs. Any unfinished work is homework and the book reports are due on Thursday, May 26 (the presentations will begin on Friday, May 27 - posted on Google Docs).
May 11: We will be working on a media literacy unit and I have posted all of the information you need to know in Google Docs. The second chapter is due on Monday by midnight. If you will be in school (and not track and field) you will have class time to work on this. Please email me your best results and if you are absent, it is up to you to complete the activities and email me your results. Please continue to work on your book report that is due May 26.
May 10: Please bring your headphones to class. We will work on the next chapter.

April 29: I posted the outline for the book report on Google Docs. This is due Thursday, May 26 and the presentations will begin on Friday, May 27. We will begin a media literacy unit on Wednesday next week - please bring headphones to class for the next 2-3 weeks. I will be using resources from Media Smarts to implement this unit.
April 27: We will continue the characteristics of a particular genre and the development of a five star rubric for the upcoming book report. I will share the book report template in class tomorrow.
For students who are away: *Katelyn - you are in the realistic fiction group; Andrew - you are in the realistic fiction group; Catherine - you are in the Dystopia and Post-Apocalyptic group. Please make sure you have a novel from this genre ASAP.
April 25: We will begin a personal choice genre novel study this week. I have asked students to choose a genre they don't typically read. We will go to the library tomorrow to search for great book choices. I will be posting information about the project this week. Students will have Tuesdays to work on this assignment in class and anything that is not completed in class will be for homework. There will be a presentation component to this assignment.
April 22: We have watched all of the movie trailers. I will work on completing the rubrics over the weekend. We brainstormed genres of literature in class today. We will begin a personal choice genre novel study in class next week. There will be more details to follow. This will be an opportunity to explore a genre you do not typically read and get recommendations from your classmates who do read that genre.
April 18: I will have the remaining students Airdrop their movie trailers to me during class tomorrow. I will also be available during the lunch hour and after school if anyone needs a bit more time to put their video together. I would like to show all of the trailers in class on Wednesday.
April 11: We film/take photos for your short story movie trailers tomorrow during class. Please come prepared with whatever you might need (costumes, props...charged phones). We will edit in class on Wednesday and prepare to hand in your trailer via Google Docs on Friday. We may be able to start to view the trailers in class on Friday, if not on Monday. *No school Thursday.
April 5: Please make sure your literature circles work is handed in.

Feb. 22: I posted the grade 7 homework on your page by mistake and vice versa... I have since fixed this problem. Your paragraph on theme is due tomorrow, so you have to submit it before class. Sept. 26: Students worked on a creative writing entry - tell the story of the baby picture you chose for your autobiography. We will go to the school library tomorrow. Today we went to library and completed an entry in our reading logs - making connections. It is important you complete all responses throughout the term. Sept. 19: I will book the Chrome books to continue the editing process on Wednesday. The date for the assignment remains Wednesday before midnight. We experienced many technical difficulties in the computer lab this afternoon... my apologies. Please make sure your autobiography is in between the pre-write and the editors' checks on the autobiography assignment. This will make it much easier for you to share your assignment. Thank you for your patience.

Sept. 9: I have asked students to have all of their school supplies ready for Monday's class. I also assigned a postcard be completed to reflect your own quote (word's to live by, your belief etc.) which is due on Wednesday, Sept. 14. You can use a postcard you already have or create your own design on the card I gave you. These will be displayed on the back bulletin boards.
We will also begin an autobiography project next week. You might want to check around for a baby picture as we will play a guessing game when the assignment is due. This year, I will ask students to use Google Docs and place the assignment in the Google classroom using GAFE (Google Apps for Education).

June 15: Students completed a reflection on third term reading today in class. This is found on Google Docs in the Language Arts classroom.
June 13-17: We finished up the book report presentation today in class. We will work on poetry, a short story and possibly some reader's theater from now until the end of the school year. Most activities will be completed in class.
June 2: We will continue book report presentations in class tomorrow and into next week. Each student has a summer reading booklet and a place to jot down book titles from their peers presentations (if the book sounds like an interesting read). If a student is absent or we did not finish the presentations from the day before, that student(s) will present the following day. This is the schedule for the upcoming book reports.

April 27: We will continue the characteristics of a particular genre and the development of a five star rubric for the upcoming book report. I will share the book report template in class tomorrow.

April 25: We will begin a personal choice genre novel study this week. I have asked students to choose a genre they don't typically read. We will go to the library tomorrow to search for great book choices. I will be posting information about the project this week. Students will have Tuesdays to work on this assignment in class and anything that is not completed in class will be for homework. There will be a presentation component to this assignment.
April 22: We have watched all of the movie trailers. I will work on completing the rubrics over the weekend. We brainstormed genres of literature in class today. We will begin a personal choice genre novel study in class next week. There will be more details to follow. This will be an opportunity to explore a genre you do not typically read and get recommendations from your classmates who do read that genre.
April 18: I will have the remaining students Airdrop their movie trailers to me during class tomorrow. I will also be available during the lunch hour and after school if anyone needs a bit more time to put their video together. I would like to show all of the trailers in class on Wednesday.
April 11: We film/take photos for your short story movie trailers tomorrow during class. Please come prepared with whatever you might need (costumes, props...charged phones). We will edit in class on Wednesday and prepare to hand in your trailer via Google Docs on Friday. We may be able to start to view the trailers in class on Friday, if not on Monday. *No school Thursday.

We also went over how to write an introduction (we will review how to write a conclusion on Wednesday). Oct. 27: Students should continue to work on their biography projects. If you had difficulty with the paragraph cake, please come and see me during class time/silent reading tomorrow.
Oct. 26: Today in class we reviewed the parts of the paragraph cake. Students will write one paragraph on Terry Fox that demonstrates an understanding of the paragraph cake (see research for each class for specific topic). I have also included some model examples to help you out and the outline for the biography assignment. Your paragraphs are due on Wednesday, Oct. 28th.

1) You can use your book(s) or the internet to continue doing research on your biography choice. Please record your information in point form on your research sheet (graphic organizer).
2) Please copy the address of any sites you take information from and paste them in a word document titled: Works Cited. We will use these sites as sources for your biography project.
3) I will assess a speaking and listening outcome on following directions during this class. Please use your time wisely.

Sept. 30: Please submit your biography choices by next Friday (you must have a book on the person you choose). We will use Terry Fox as a model example on how to take jot notes using a graphic organizer when doing research. There won't be any homework tonight or tomorrow night - unless, you want to begin reading a book on your biography choice. This is also an excellent choice for silent reading during class - I've noticed some students already doing this :).
Sept. 29: Biography group presentations tomorrow.
Sept. 28: Group presentations Wednesday. Library tomorrow - I will show students the biography section of the library.
Sept. 24: We will continue to work on the group work you started today in order to complete the posters tomorrow and present on Monday (class activity on biographies).
Sept. 23: Start to think about who you would like to learn about for your biography project. Please make sure you can access a book on the person you choose. There are many available in the classroom and our school library to compliment your online research. These biography books, are great choices for silent reading.
Sept. 22: Today we reviewed the difference in quality of reading responses (using a 4 point scale). We will continue to check in regarding the best quality a response can be. Please bring your book for silent reading, your binder and a pen/pencil to be prepared and ready for class.
Sept. 21: Please come prepared for silent reading - tomorrow we have library.
Sept. 18: Some autobiographies still need to be handed in. Please hand your work in before homeroom if you want to be included in "Name that Baby" - guessing game of who is who.
Sept. 17: All parts of your autobiography assignment is due tomorrow (see the student checklist on your outline).
Sept. 17: Computer Lab class:
1) Complete the editing process with your partner. Please remember to complete the editor's check with a comment.
2)Type your good copy.
3) Revise and edit your typed copy - have you used complete sentences? Have you used proper capitalization? Did you remember to include your full name in your introduction paragraph?
4) Print your autobiography. Check the rubric of this assignment. Do you have everything you need to hand in your assignment (see student checklist).
5) If you finish you work, check out this website: www.polarexpressions.ca for more information on a Poetry and Short Story Contest.
6) I'm looking for a few good websites on typing/keyboarding tutorials to practise typing skills. Please let me know if you have any recommendations.
Sept. 16: The rough draft of your assignment was due today. If you have editing to finish up, you can do that at the beginning of class tomorrow in the computer lab before typing your good copy.
Sept. 15: A sub was in for me today, but I wanted to send a quick reminder that your rough draft of your autobiography is due tomorrow. We will go to the computer lab on Thursday and your assignment is due on Friday (see your student checklist on your outline/rubric handout).
Sept. 14: Tuesday is library day! Each week we will focus on a different reading strategy and practise using that strategy in our responses each week. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to do the work you have missed. I have attached a template for your reading responses that you can download, copy, paste, complete and print the response to insert into your reading log.
