April 13 (see above poster):
Good morning!
I'm a producer with CBC Books, and I administer a writing challenge called Shakespeare Selfie for Canadian students in Grades 7 to 12.
The premise is that we challenge students to write a monologue or soliloquy in the voice of a Shakespearean character about a modern-day current affairs event. Last year's winners wrote about Beyoncé and the U.S. primaries.
There are two categories: Grades 7 to 9 and Grades 10 to 12. The submission period begins April 10, 2017 and ends April 28, 2017 at 6 p.m. ET.
I'm emailing in hopes you will tell your students, colleagues and parents about this contest. The two winners receive an iPad mini. In addition, their school libraries will receive 50 young adult books.
We have posters you can download and print off for your classrooms: in colour and in black and white. Here's a mobile-friendly version you can email to people.
If you're interested in staying informed about student writing initiatives run by CBC, please consider signing up for our newsletter. We run two youth writing challenges a year. You'll receive emails when contests are about to start, throughout the submission period and when the winners are announced.
Thank you for taking the time to read through this email. Please send any questions my way. Feel free to send my email address to colleagues who are interested and have questions.
All the best,
Jane van Koeverden

Smartphone Film Festival
Frequently asked questions (please visit the website if you would like more information):
Is it OK for my kid to enter a movie?
Absolutely. Because there are no age limits on creativity or the ability to use a smartphone, there are no age limits here. You will just have to add your name to the submission form as the parent (or guardian) who is vouching for a filmmaker who is under 18. Also, you may have to keep your ego in check if your child makes a better movie than yours.
What’s the deadline for submitting my film to the festival?
Update: Because of some unexpected and particularly annoying technical troubles we were having with the film entry form, the deadline has been extended. The new, current deadline for submissions is Monday, March 31, 2017 at 11:59pm Atlantic time. That’s instead of the original, pre-glitch deadline of Wednesday, March 9. No entries will be accepted for the 2017 SPFF after this, so please just meet or beat the deadline.
